I gained a new daughter this year when my oldest son married in June. We love her and we are very happy that he is happy. It also means I have another lovely human to make things for. She showed me a photo from Instagram of a granny square bonnet she liked and asked if I could make that. I took a peak and said sure! The person on Instagram was making them to sell, not selling the pattern, so I just reverse engineered it as best I could. It looked like she used a fuzzy yarn like the Caron Cloud Cake, so I bought this one which I think is a perfect match, and then used stash yarn for the rest.

Make 7 granny squares.

With gold yarn Ch 3, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1 Ch 2 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch 2. Finish off. (12 sts total around)

Rnd 2  Join white in any space between two stitches of Rnd 1, ch 2 (counts as dc), 1dc in same sp, *2dc in next sp between sts, repeat from * around, sl st to join in top of beg ch 2. Finish off. (24 sts total around)

Rnd 3 Join teal in any space between groups of 2 stitches, ch 2 (counts as st), 2dc in same sp, *3dc in next sp between pair of 2 sts, repeat from * around, sl st to join in top of beg ch 2. Finish off. (36 sts total around)

This yarn is self striping, so it was a bit of a challenge to get the right colours happening where I wanted them too. I used the tan for the 4th round in the granny squares, then moved onto the darker taupe for the joining round.

Rnd 4 Join Caron Cake in any space between groups of 3 stitches. Ch 2 (counts as st), 2dc in same sp, 3dc in next sp between groups of 3 sts, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next sp between groups of 3 sts which is the corner of the square, *3dc in next 2 spaces between groups of 3 sts, (3tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next sp between groups of 3. Repeat around, sl st to join in beg ch 2. Finish off.

Round 5 Using next colour that appears in Caron Cake, work another round of dc cluster granny stitch, joining squares as you go. Final square will be the angled granny at the crown, each side of it will join with a side of 4 of the granny squares.

Set up for Edging

With right side facing, starting in any corner space and continuing with Caron Cake, work sc evenly around all sides, chain 2 and turn.

Row 1 of neckline Working across next 4 granny squares, work back post, front post dc ribbing, skipping every 4th stitch across to draw in neckline. Ch 2, turn.

Rows 2-5 work back post, front post dc ribbing across. At the end of last you should have right side facing. Do not fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 1 chain 5, sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in next chain, hdc in next 2 chains. Working across ends of ribbing, work 2 dc in end post of each row. Working across sc stitches, (3 dc, dc2tog) across to end of sc stitches, fudge the end if there aren’t 5 stitches left to work pattern. Working across ends of ribbing, work 2 dc in end post of each row. Ch 5, turn. 

Row 2 sc in 2nd chain from hook, sc in next chain, hdc in next 2 chains. Dc across to last 5 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3 sk first st, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc across to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts. .

Row 4  Using the next colour in the Caron Cake, ch 1, do not turn, work crab stitch as here How to Crochet Crab Stitch Edging 

At end of row you’ll make a tie, *ch 51, sc in each purl bump back to beginning. Sc 2tog in end of edging to make secure and tidy. Finish off.*

At other end of row, with right side facing, join yarn and repeat from * to * so you have two ties.

The bonnet turned out a bit big on Crystal but she says it will work.
